Zeeland Record
The outcome was a little closer than a year ago, but voters in the Zeeland Public Schools district on May 6 approved an 18-mill, one-year renewal of the district’s non-homestead levy.
With about 19 percent of the district’s registered voters turning out, the levy passed with 3,238 yes votes – about 63 percent of the total votes cast – to 1,924 no votes. That total included vote counts from both Ottawa and Allegan counties.
“We are deeply grateful to the Zeeland community for renewing the non-homestead millage,” ZPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Scott Korpak said. “This approval reflects the strong partnership between our schools and the families, neighbors, and businesses that support them. It’s a reminder that when we come together, we create the best possible future for our students."
A year ago, about 71 percent of ZPS voters who turned out for the non-homestead millage election voted in favor of the levy. This year’s election generated a turnout 27 percent higher than last year’s vote, influenced by a companion special education millage vote for the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (see story elsewhere on this page).
The non-homestead levy is a tax that is applied to businesses, rental homes, vacation homes and other properties that are not a family’s primary residence. The tax does not apply to primary residences.
The levy is expected to generate $11,355,713 for ZPS during the 2026-27 school year, representing about 11 percent of the district’s revenues.
Support for the levy was strongest in the city of Zeeland, where 75.3 percent of voters cast “yes” ballots (717 to 235) and in the three Holland Township precincts that are part of ZPS, where 72.6 percent of those casting ballots voted in favor (1,096 to 414). In Zeeland Township, the levy passed in three of the four precincts, with a combined vote count of 945 yes votes to 580 no votes.
A majority of those turning out in Olive, Blendon and Robinson townships opposed the levy, in addition to voters in the Allegan County townships of Fillmore, Overisel and Salem that are part of the Zeeland district.
But that was more than offset by the support in the more highly-populated municipalities.
