An investigation is underway into the cause of a major fire at a Borculo-area business Sunday afternoon.

The fire at Michigan Wood Fibers in the 9400 block of Henry Court was first reported at 2:23 p.m. Sunday.

“The fire involved large volumes of wood mulch stored on the property,” Ottawa County Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt said.

Because of the amount of combustible material at the scene, at least 21 fire agencies from Ottawa, Allegan and Muskegon counties were called in to assist the Blendon Township Fire Department at the scene.
“Challenges responders faced included ferrying fire-fighting water to the scene as well as thick smoke that settled in the area in the evening, among other challenges,” Hunt said.

Besides the fire departments, other resources responding to the scene included Life EMS, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Ottawa County Emergency Management and EM volunteers, and the Ottawa County Road Commission.

The last fire units left the scene at 1:45 a.m. Monday, Hunt said.

“The cause of the fire is at this time unknown, but mulch fires of this nature can be caused by external ignition sources or even spontaneous combustion,” Hunt said.
