Tournament brings mixed results
for C-S baseball team
The Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team responded to a 3-2 walk off loss to Battle Creek Lakeview in the opener of the All City Tournament with a 15-3 victory over Battle Creek Central May 10 at Bailey Park.
Playing in a co-op arrangement with Battle Creek St. Philip, C-S wore St. Phil uniforms for the Battle Creek City tournament.
“Our St. Phil kids have got to come in and put on the blue and gold (C-S uniform) every single time and the only way we get to play in this tournament is because we’re considered a St. Phil City team. There hasn’t been a St. Phil team come through wearing a St. Phil uniform in two years. We just thought out of respect that we’d make this a tradition once a year,” explained C-S coach Kevin Langs.
The tournament split sent the Panthers into a May 13 game against Mendon with an 11-2 record.
The loss to Lakeview snapped a seven game winning streak.
C-S opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single by St. Phil’s Carter Dzwik.
Lakeview responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and then the pitchers took over.
C-S tied the contest in the top of the sixth inning when Gavin Eyre smacked a hard hit triple to right center field, and scored on an RBI ground out by Carter Dzwik.
Lakeview won the game on a walk and triple to right field.
C-S managed just three hits.
Carter Dzwik suffered the loss despite pitching a strong game. He allowed three hits, one earned run and two walks in five innings pitched. The Fighting Tiger pitcher struck out six Spartans.
Two pitchers held Battle Creek Central to three hits and seven different Panthers recorded hits in a 15-3 win for C-S in the second game of the tournament.

Dzwik struck out six and walked four and Wurtzel struck out two batters and did not issue a walk.
