By American Bar Association

Delcianna Winders, associate professor of law and director of the Animal Law and Policy Institute at Vermont Law and Graduate School, received the American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section’s Excellence in the Advancement of Animal Law Award on May 8 during the TIPS Section Conference in Washington, D.C. The award, presented by the TIPS Animal Law Committee, recognizes exceptional work by an Animal Law Committee member who, through commitment and leadership, has advanced the humane treatment of animals through the law.

Winders is a prominent figure in the field of animal law, recognized for her extensive contributions to the advancement of humane treatment of animals through legal avenues. Over the past three years, her accomplishments have been particularly noteworthy, especially her leadership in initiating the establishment of an educational institute focused on training the next generation of animal advocates.

“Delcianna is a leader in the field of animal law who is committed to not only the humane treatment of animals but to advancing the legal education and training for students in the field of animal law,” said Chris Nolan, TIPS Section chair. “TIPS is proud to honor our esteemed friend of our section with the Excellence in the Advancement of Animal Law Award.”

Winders has taken a leading role at VLGS, playing a key part in developing a robust curriculum that integrates academic rigor with practical skills. Under her leadership, the institute has become an essential resource for students dedicated to animal law, equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to become effective advocates.

Before joining VLGS, Winders directed the world’s first law school clinic focused on farmed animal advocacy at Lewis & Clark Law School, setting a precedent in legal education. Her expertise was further developed during her tenure as vice president and deputy general counsel at the PETA Foundation, where she gained insights into the challenges and opportunities within the field. In addition to teaching, Winders is a prolific writer, with scholarly articles published in legal journals and contributions to publications like National Geographic and Newsweek, bridging academic discourse and public awareness on critical animal law and policy issues.

Winders received her law degree from New York University School of Law and her bachelor’s degree from University of California, Santa Cruz.
