Visitors at the Galesburg Historical Museum in the City of Galesburg will soon enjoy more space to view local history.

Museum Curator Keith Martin said after years of planning, the Museum Board has approved a contractor to build an addition to the museum.

Martin said a 60’ x 80’ pole building type of structure will be added onto the existing museum. The addition will be attached to the back of the existing museum, running the length of the museum and extending to the east.

Martin said because the project has been put on hold for some time, a final estimate is not available, but he guessed the cost would be approximately $300,000.

He adds several generous donors have made this opportunity possible.

He said Tony Dixon of Premier Building and Remodeling, of Richland, will be the contractor overseeing the project.

The museum curator said some displays will be moved into the new section for better viewing and offer more room to other displays in the original building.

He adds some of the addition will also be used for storage.

Martin said the 1931 Model A fire truck will have a home in the new addition.

“There’s no room left in that museum. We have it full,” said Martin.

Construction will start as soon as property lines where the addition will be placed, is finalized.

Martin hopes the project can be done by the end of the year.

The longtime Galesburg resident said the Museum Board has been planning an addition for a number of years, however multiple delays, starting with Covid, have slowed the process. Martin adds he had a contractor to build the addition, however that person died, putting the Museum Board in a position to start the process of locating another builder.

The museum is open Wednesdays from 4:30-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., however if visitors want to set up an appointment, they can call Martin at 269-716-8981 or 665-9953.

The museum addition will be constructed behind the Galesburg Historical Museum.
