Engelhardt was first appointed to a 4-year term on the Executive Committee in July, 2023.
The Executive Committee provides strategic and budgetary guidance and oversight for ICLE, including input on ICLE’s mission, vision, curriculum, and product development.
Engelhardt is a partner at Ann Arbor-based Goethel Engelhardt where he focuses his practice on wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases in the areas of medical malpractice and automobile negligence.
As a patient safety advocate, he is a dedicated believer in collaborative practice and health care communication and resolution programs. He seeks to help patients and providers learn from and prevent patient medical injuries, while rebuilding trust between patients and the health care system after an adverse event. A Harvard Law School trained mediator, he also serves as a facilitator, case evaluator and court-appointed discovery master.
In addition to his legal practice, Engelhardt is an adjunct professor and clinical field supervisor at Cooley Law School, where he mentors students and teaches courses in medical malpractice and litigation skills. He has been a repeat guest lecturer for the University of Michigan Law School's trial practice courses.
He is a regular author, editor, and continuing legal education speaker on medical negligence and litigation issues. In addition, Engelhardt, along with his wife and law partner Jennifer, present medicolegal and patient safety seminars to medical and nursing programs across the country.
Before becoming a lawyer, he served for over 12 years as an officer with a large law enforcement agency. He is a past chairperson of the Negligence Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan (SBM) and continues to coordinate the Section’s educational partnership with the American Board of Trial Advocates Michigan Chapter. Engelhardt currently serves on the SBM Special Committee on Professionalism and Civility and is a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation.
In recognition of his trial skills, civility, and professionalism, he was honored with the prestigious Respected Advocate Award (2023) by the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel.
