The Climax Township board started discussion about changing the administrative fee structure for various services at the July 8 regular township board meeting.
Climax Township Supervisor Trent Piper said the most recent resolution addressing administrative fees for zoning text amendments was in 2009.
Instead of having one flat fee, the board talked about having a deposit based fee structure for items like a land split, text amendment to zoning, site plan review, or zoning variance. If the money deposited for the application is not used for a service, the unused money would be refunded. If the township costs exceed the amount deposited, the applicant would owe the township the difference.
“We as the township board, or the township itself, we are not in the business to subsidize somebody’s choice if they want to change their property, whether it be lot lines, ask for a variance, split their land. It should be actual cost,” said Piper, who reminded the board the township had an incident when a bill from an engineering company for a specific application was well in excess of the township’s fee.
“We never know what those fees are,” adds Piper.
The board expressed interest in discussing administrative fees in the future.
New Credit Card Policy Resolution Approved
The township board unanimously approved a credit card use policy resolution. The new policy establishes the monthly credit card limitation an officer or employee can make for purchases is $5,000.
New Fire Truck Being Built
Climax Township Fire Chief Scott Smith said the body of the new fire truck the Climax Township Board purchased earlier, is being built.
He is hopeful the new fire truck, which will be a medical first responder truck, will be delivered in the fall.
The Climax Township fire chief informed the board there were 24 calls for service for the month of June. There were 81 calls for the quarter. As of July 8 the local fire department has responded to six calls and 153 calls for service for the calendar year.
Township Board Will Solicit Bids for Parking Lot Maintenance
Township Supervisor Trent Piper said in 2015 or 2016 the township board had crack fill and seal coat maintenance performed on the township hall asphalt parking lot in conjunction with the same work that was performed at the Post Office parking lot.
Piper felt it would be a good time to reach out to the owner of the Post Office building to see if the owner would like to have the same routine parking lot maintenance performed again to extend the life of both parking lots.
Township Board Trustee Richard Thierjung will reach out to multiple companies to solicit bids to have the work performed and Piper will discuss the estimates with the owner of the Climax Post Office building and parking lot.
In other items covered at the July 8 Township Board meeting:
• The township board had a new township board meeting table that was purchased earlier from Locus Grove Furniture, delivered and was used for the first time at the July 8 meeting.
• Planning Commission member Joel Amos said the Planning Commission is still researching ordinances regarding property fences and for animal unit permits pertaining to livestock.
