35th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act celebrated July 24

Passed into law in 35 years ago in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (AD) provides sweeping protections against discrimination in several key areas, including employment, public services, telecommunications, transportation and public and private spaces.

Oakland County is pleased to mark this historic milestone by hosting an Access for All Americans with Disabilities Celebration Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, in the Oakland County Circuit Court Courtyard. 

All residents are invited to this fun and festive program, which will feature:

• Oakland County Executive David Coulter

• Guest speaker Harry Weaver, who serves as Oakland County’s Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer. He has been a champion in the DEI space for more than 20 years, working at the Chippewa Valley School District in Clinton Township, as the Education Director and Certified Trainer at the Anti-Defamation League, Michigan 
Region and as an independent DEI consultant

• Keynote speaker Erica Coulston, president/co-founder of Walk The Line Recovery Therapy. Coulston was 23 years old in 2001 when she was in a car accident and sustained a spinal cord injury.

• Emcee Sam Jenkins of Empowering Communities w. Sam Jenkins, an enthusiastic advocate for building inclusive and connected communities

• Demonstrations of adaptive sports and equipment

• Yard games for all ages and abilities

• Food trucks

“It’s important that we take time as a community to focus on building a better, more accessible world for all,” Oakland County Parks Recreation Program Supervisor Sandy Dorey said. “Increasing accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities strengthens our communities and overall sense of well-being.”

A certified therapeutic recreation specialist, Dorey leads the Oakland County Parks Adaptive Recreation team, which is passionate about providing inclusion services so that individuals with disabilities can participate in any OCP program or event. Partnering with more than 30 non-profit agencies, schools and disabled sports organizations, OCP provides a wide range of diverse recreational options.
