ORS was recognized for its How Do I … ? initiative, which provided participants in the State of Michigan 401(k) and 457 Plans with targeted communications about their retirement plans and retirement healthcare benefits.
ORS was one of five public plan administrators honored for Holistic Financial Wellness, with 17 others recognized in four other Leadership Award categories. This marks the third time in five years that ORS has received NAGDCA honors.
“Historically, we've known that many members do not know which retirement plan they are in or specifics they need for their plan,” ORS Executive Director Anthony Estell said. “We sent them personalized messages to clearly call out detailed portions of their plan as well as what type of healthcare benefits they are entitled to.
“We work to support and guide those we serve as they navigate their retirement journey," he added.
Conducted from June 2024 to February 2025, How Do I...? provided participants with email messages about their retirement plans. The topics included learning about the plan, updating beneficiaries, understanding healthcare in retirement, increasing contribution rates, and getting more information on the State of Michigan 401(k) and 457 Plans (the plans).
The plans are administered by Voya Financial. How Do I...? encouraged participants to engage and interact with Voya through live webinars and to review their accounts.
In addition to emails, How Do I...? included pages on the ORS and the plans’ websites, plans-specific educational webinars, and awareness on ORS social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, and X).
NAGDCA Leadership Awards nominations were reviewed by a volunteer awards committee and judged on originality and measurable results. Award recipients will be honored at the NAGDCA Annual Conference, Sept. 28-Oct. 1 in San Diego.
ORS and Voya have received the Leadership Award three times in the last five years:
• In 2023, the year-long Women & Retirement campaign highlighted the importance of women actively engaging in planning and saving for retirement. It was recognized for outstanding achievement in Participant Education & Communication.
• In 2022, the October 2021 National Retirement Security Month campaign – themed It's your future, retire well– was recognized.
The Michigan Office of Retirement Services administers retirement programs for state employees, public school employees, judges, state police, and National Guard members. This includes more than 602,000 customers (about 265,000 active, 20,000 deferred, and 317,000 retired). Nearly one out of every 13 Michigan adults living in one out of every eight Michigan households benefits from ORS services.
