National employee benefits and ERISA law firm J.J. Conway Law is pleased to announce that principal attorney, founder and litigator John Joseph (J.J.) Conway has been named to the 2025 Michigan Super Lawyers list.

Conway was recognized in the practice areas of employee benefits. He is a veteran of the Super Lawyers list, first appearing as a Super Lawyers Rising Star from 2008 to 2011, and appearing on the Super Lawyers traditional list since 2013.

Building up his reputation for more than 25 years as a nationally recognized trial attorney in all facets of ERISA and contractual employee benefits law, including health and long-term disability insurance and retirement plans, Conway has witnessed the power of employee benefits to preserve financial stability. He has navigated the legal complexities of disability, employee health benefits, and ERISA law—ranging from wins in autism services coverage for children to employee benefits protection during the City of Detroit bankruptcy, to mental health coverage for children suffering from life-threatening severe behavioral health conditions. In emerging benefit denial trends, he has advocated for clients in cases fighting for disability insurance coverage for Post-COVID-Conditions (PCC) and for new mothers whose disabilities are pregnancy or post-pregnancy related.

The Michigan Super Lawyers honor follows several other legal accolades for Conway, including making his debut appearance this month on the Best Lawyers® list in the practice areas of employee benefits/ERISA law and litigation/ERISA.  He also has multiple honors as a DBusiness Top Lawyer, Leading Lawyer, and Elite Lawyer. Additionally, he was named a Crain’s Detroit Business Notable Leader in Labor and Employment Law in 2023 and to the Leaders in the Law Class of 2021 by the legal trade publication Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Conway has been the recipient of other awards throughout his career as well, including the Thomas P. Moore Leadership in Philanthropy Award from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the State Bar of Michigan Champion of Justice Award.

Conway received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Marquette University and obtained his law degree at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.  He is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, and State Bar of Arizona. He has also been elected to membership in the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation and the Fellows of the Michigan State Bar Foundation.

With an understanding of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA), he handles the business side of religious property for all faiths to protect the religious organization’s right to use its property within the parameters of its spiritual mission.

For more than 20 years, Dalton has worked with churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and almost all types of religious assembly use throughout the country to secure site plan approval or litigate claims in federal courts. Starting with a case of a very small church against the City of Southfield, Dalton has successfully represented all types of religious uses and schools in trial and on appeal across the United States. He also negotiates and litigates matters related to trust clauses for churches who wish to leave their denominations and keep their property.

Also a writer, Dalton is the author of “Religious Property Disputes and the Law: House of God. Laws of Man.,” published by the American Bar Association in 2022; the 2020 eBook about protocols for the United Methodist Church separation -“What the Proposed UMC Separation Means for Your Church”; and the 2017 e-book “Navigating the United Methodist Church Trust Clause.” His award-winning “Litigating Religious Land Use Cases” was published by the American Bar Association in 2014, with a second edition in 2017.

The Super Lawyers distinction is one of several for Dalton and comes as he makes his debut appearance in the 32nd edition of The Best Lawyers in America®, also announced this month. He has been named a Go-To-Lawyer in real estate and a Leader in the Law by the legal trade publication, Michigan Lawyers Weekly, a DBusiness Top Lawyer, and a Crain’s Detroit Business Notable Executive in Real Estate. Brooks Kushman is proud to announce that Sangeeta Shah and Frank Angileri were both named in the latest edition of IAM Strategy 300: The World’s Leading IP Strategists by IAM.

Shah is the president of Brooks Kushman, leading the firm’s Executive Committee and driving its strategic vision. In her first year, she expanded the practice by bringing on several new attorneys and spearheading initiatives to strengthen the firm’s infrastructure, positioning it for long-term growth.

In addition to her leadership role, Shah maintains an active practice with more than 20 years of experience managing patent portfolios, PTAB matters, patent litigation, and opinions. As an early leader in inter partes review proceedings, she serves as co-chair of the firm’s post-grant practice and works closely with Fortune 500 clients, providing strategic counseling on post-grant matters and complex global intellectual property portfolios. Her expertise has earned national recognition from Managing IP, Best Lawyers, IAM, AIPLA, and the PTAB Bar Association.

Prior to becoming president, Shah served as CEO of Brooks Kushman, where she guided strategic planning, advanced client-focused initiatives, and expanded the firm’s presence beyond Michigan to markets such as Silicon Valley, Chicago, Los Angeles, Germany, and Asia. She developed mentoring and training programs, built niche expertise in emerging areas, and implemented advanced technology and analytics tools to enhance client service. As the firm’s former chief diversity officer, she launched a range of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that earned recognition from ChIPs and Diversity
Lab and achieved Midsize Mansfield Certified Plus status. She also hosts the Breaking Mindsets Podcast, where she interviews leaders who challenge expectations and drive meaningful change.

Angileri focuses his practice on IP litigation and post-grant proceedings. With nearly more than 30 years of experience representing small, medium-sized, and large corporations in contested IP matters, Angileri has successfully tried patent, trademark, trade secret, and copyright cases in federal courts nationwide, the Courts of Appeals for the Sixth and Circuit, and the International Trade Commission. His litigation experience spans a wide range of technologies and industries, including automotive, consumer electronics, industrial technologies, food and beverage, and home appliances.

Angileri previously served as president of Brooks Kushman and as co-chair of the firm’s Post-Grant Proceedings practice. In these roles, he was instrumental in strengthening the firm’s national reputation, successfully representing clients in more than 70 IP rights proceedings and obtaining final written decisions from the PTAB holding 273 patent claims unpatentable.
