ABA Section of State, Local, and Tribal Government Law celebrates its 90th anniversary

By American Bar Association

The American Bar Association section dedicated to government law marked a transformative moment in August at its annual meeting in Toronto. The group officially changed its name from the Section of State, Local, and Government Law to the Section of State, Local, and Tribal Government Law, a move formally recognizing and strengthening its longstanding commitment to tribal law and the importance of tribal governance within the legal landscape.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary, the section launched a vibrant initiative called The 90 Club. Throughout 2025 and 2026, members and supporters will participate in special programs, meetings and fundraising activities to honor the section’s history and reinforce its commitment to public service and legal excellence. The campaign serves as a bridge connecting generations of professionals working for the benefit of state, local and tribal communities and invites broader support for their ongoing mission.  To learn more about the section and The 90 Club, visit www.americanbar.org/groups/state_local_government/about/donate/90club

Chair Bill Scheiderich spoke of the significance of the anniversary, noting that this milestone coincided with the section’s expanded focus. Since its beginnings in 1935 as the Section of Municipal Law, this group has evolved, responding to changes in government structure and legal practice. Over decades, the section’s name shifted to reflect these changes, culminating in its latest title, which acknowledges the interconnectedness of state, local and tribal governments.

For 90 years, the section has advanced policy, education and outreach, benefiting not only lawyers, but also law students and community leaders. The 90 Club campaign, along with longstanding publications such as The Urban Lawyer and the State and Local Law Newsletter, offers opportunities for both reflection and forward-looking engagement.

The mission of the Section of State, Local, and Tribal Government Law is to serve as the leading association for lawyers, academics, law students and other professionals involved in urban, state and local government law and policy. We offer access to cutting-edge expert insights on issues relevant to our members’ practices and communities, while fostering environments for collaboration and sharing of best practices among practitioners and members.
