The Department of Health and Human Services launched an online platform to help track and improve youth placement at its juvenile justice facilities, it announced Tuesday.
The Bed Management Tool, designed in collaboration with the University of Michigan's Child and Adolescent Data Lab, will have a dashboard of information including availability of beds at juvenile justice centers updated in real time, an interactive map of facilities and a reporting tool to monitor occupancy trends.
The platform is funded by the federal government as part of a larger juvenile justice reform initiative and will be updated to include additional services later this fall.
“This Bed Management Tool will meet the need for efficient, data-driven decision making in allocating beds in our juvenile justice system and ensure more kids in need get connected to resources and supports that help them succeed,” Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II said in a statement. “As a state, we are only as prosperous as our next generation. Let's keep Standing Tall for a Michigan where every kid can achieve health, wealth, and prosperity.”
Currently, 80 facilities are listed and searchable in the Bed Management Tool with more to come.
A centralized system like this, DHHS said, will help court employees, caseworkers and families secure out-of-home youth placements more efficiently and reduce the staff time burden of occupancy inquiries on residential and detention facilities.
“MDHHS is dedicated to transforming Michigan's juvenile justice system to ensure every youth is placed in an environment that best supports their needs,” DHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel said in a statement. “The Bed Management Tool represents a key step forward leveraging data, technology and collaboration to drive better outcomes for young people.”
