Zeeland Record
Several thousand people lined the streets of Zeeland Saturday afternoon under sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures for the annual Pumpkinfest parade.
With temperatures in the mid-80s, most spectators wore shorts and T-shirts as they watched marching bands and floats, most with either a pumpkin or circus theme, parade west on Main Avenue, then turn south onto State Street and then back east along Central Avenue.
The Zeeland High School marching band wore black T-shirts promoting its “World Tour” while performing Chicago’s classic “25 Or 6 To 4.” Spectators also enjoyed music by the combined Cityside and Creekside middle school bands as well as from the Zeeland Christian School band, who played The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.”
The parade was just one of the highlights of the three-day festival that began last Thursday with events ranging from the Avenue of Art tour, featuring 25 pieces of circus-themed art along Main, to horse-drawn carriage rides, to the first-ever “Beer Choir” at Tripelroot. The festival had larger-than-expected crowds both Friday and Sunday, Pumpkinfest organizer Lynette Lam said.
There were all kinds of activities for kids to enjoy. On Friday afternoon, a record 114 kids took part in the annual kids’ tractor pull on Main Avenue. After Saturday’s parade, long lines of kids waited to get into the bounce house and the petting zoo during Kidzfest on Church Street.
Five-year-old Levi and 3-year-old Logan Rabideau of Zeeland waited patiently to get balloon animals made by Jim Perry, also known as “The Balloon Guy,” during Kidzfest. Levi got a green snake balloon, while Logan got a yellow giraffe balloon.
“It’s fun. It’s a good time,” said Jamie Rabideau, the boys’ mother, who brings the family to Pumpkinfest every year.
Other highlights of the weekend included a laser light show last Friday and live music both Friday and Saturday night.
“It was a fantastic weekend where families of all ages came together to enjoy games and delicious carnival food,” Lam said. “We are very grateful for the love and support of our community.”
