Brian Weber grew up in the Washtenaw County city of Milan, and graduated from Spring Arbor University with a B.A. in History and Political Economy. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 2021. After being admitted to the Michigan Bar, he completed two judicial clerkships, first for Judge Joseph L. Falvey, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and then for Justice Brian K. Zahra of the Michigan Supreme Court. In 2025, he joined the Lansing office of Butzel Long as an associate in the litigation group.
Residence: I live in Holt with my wife, our daughter, and our two cats.
What would surprise people about your job? Sometimes the hardest arguments to make involve really simple or basic ideas. When something seems really obvious it can be hard to explain.
Why did you become a lawyer? I’ve always found satisfaction in figuring out problems. The legal profession was a possibility floating in the back of my mind for many years. After college, I interned for law-oriented human rights nonprofit called International Justice Mission (IJM). Although I didn’t think I would want to practice human rights law as a career, I was impressed by the IJM lawyers’ ability to use their legal skills to help people, and that inspired me to take the LSAT and apply for law school. Now I get to use my training to help people find solutions to their legal problems.
What is your favorite law-related TV show, movie, and/or book? My favorite law-related movie is probably “12 Angry Men”. “My Cousin Vinnie” is another top choice. “Better Call Saul” is up there for TV shows.
Who are your law role models – real and/or fictional? My biggest legal role models have been the judges I worked for.
If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? I’m a big fan of golf, so I’d like to trade places with Scottie Scheffler for a day to see what it’s like being the best golfer in the world. (Or, for that matter, just being good at golf.)
What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Be sure you’ve done your homework about what being a lawyer will be like and whether it’s right for you and what you want. Don’t go to law school on a whim or because it seems like a guaranteed path to a lucrative career. Make sure you talk to some lawyers in different practice areas before making your decision. Get a sense of the day-to-day of being a lawyer before you invest your time, effort, and money in law school.
What is your proudest moment as a lawyer? Probably the first time I went on Westlaw and saw an opinion in a case I had worked on. It was cool and surreal for me as a brand new lawyer.
What do you do to relax? I like to follow my favorite sports teams, play golf, spend time with friends, read, watch TV, and be outdoors.
What other career path might you have chosen? During college, I thought about going to graduate school for history and trying to become a college professor.
What would you say to your 16-year-old self? Don’t worry too much about things you can’t control. Like Calvin Coolidge said, if you see ten troubles coming down the road, you can be sure that nine will run into the ditch before they reach you.
Favorite local hangouts: I’m always up for a trip to Horrocks Farm Market. For a caffeine boost, I like to go to Coffee Barrel in Holt. And Moo-ville Creamery in Eaton Rapids is my favorite local place for ice cream.
Favorite websites: I enjoy trivia, so I’m constantly looking things up on Wikipedia. I also really like MGoBlog, which is a website with in-depth coverage and analysis of University of Michigan sports.
Favorite app: Spotify. If I’m driving or doing chores around the house, I typically listen to music or a podcast.
Favorite music: Some of my favorite genres are alternative and indie rock, classic rock, classic country, and folk-inspired Americana. A sample of artists I’ve been listening to a lot lately includes The Killers, The Milk Carton Kids, Corb Lund, and Pulp. When I need some background music, I like movie and video game soundtracks as well as classical music.
What is your happiest childhood memory? My family would go on camping and fishing trips to the Upper Peninsula every summer when I was a kid. Some of my favorite memories are from those trips.
What is your most treasured material possession? I’ve put together a decent collection of books over the years. Nothing valuable in a monetary sense, but I’m emotionally attached to the various books I have sitting on my shelves.
What has been your favorite year so far and why? Probably either 2021, when I got married, graduated law school, passed the bar, and started my career, or 2024, when my daughter was born.
What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve ever been? Standing on top of a mountain out west and looking around for miles in every direction.
If you could have dinner with three people, past or present, who would they be? C.S. Lewis, Alfred Hitchcock, Groucho Marx.
Favorite place to spend money: Cabela’s. Book stores. Anywhere that sells food.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement? Getting married and starting a family.
What is the most unusual thing you have done? On a dare, I once ate 35 bowls of noodles in a single sitting.
