Councilman Rick Van Dorp, who has served on the council since 2004, is running unopposed to replace Mayor Kevin Klynstra, who did not seek re-election after 14 years of serving in the city’s highest elected office.
Six candidates – Andrew Bult, Kylee DeBoer, Ericka Humbert, Glenn Kass, Amy Langeland and Rebecca Perkins – are running for three available four-year seats on the council.
It’s the first contested City Council election in the city since 2011, when four candidates – Van Dorp, Sally Gruppen, Al Dannenberg and Schuyler Wilson – ran for three seats, with Van Dorp, Gruppen and Dannenberg winning.
The Zeeland Record sent out questionnaires earlier this summer to each of the council candidates to find out why they are running and what they feel is the most important issue facing the city. The Record first published the answers to those questionnaires in August and is republishing those answers on Page 7 of today’s edition.
