An 81-year-old Zeeland Township woman was killed Oct. 22 when she was struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross Main Avenue near Cityside Middle School.
Mary Boschma was killed in the accident that occurred shortly after 8 a.m. According to Zeeland Police, a pickup truck driven by a 32-year-old Zeeland man was headed westbound on Main when it struck Boschma with its driver’s side mirror as she attempted to cross Main.
It was dark and rainy at the time of the accident, Police Chief Tim Jungel said.
First responders attempted lifesaving efforts at the scene before transporting Boschma to Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital. She was then transferred to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where she died, Jungel said.
“The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing and there is no suspicion of drug or alcohol use,” Jungel said. “The truck appeared to have the right of way.”
Responding units at the scene were Zeeland Police, Zeeland Fire Department, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and AMR Ambulance.
