Zeeland Record
New Groningen Elementary School in the Zeeland Public Schools district has been ranked among the top 100 elementary schools in the state of Michigan by U.S. News and World Report.
New Groningen ranked No. 79 on the U.S. News and World Report survey, which is determined by students’ performance on state-required tests, graduation, and how well they prepare their students for high school.
New Groningen serves students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. The student population for the school is 534 students.
According to U.S. News and World Report, 67 percent of the school’s students scored at or above the proficient level in math, and 70 percent scored at or above the level of proficiency in reading.
In an annual report to parents and community members that came out in February, New Groningen Principal Leslie Rindfleisch wrote that the school has continued several initiatives to increase student performance in reading “including a comprehensive phonics program in grades K-5 and rigorous reading program in grades K-5.”
In that same report, Rindfleisch wrote that the school is addressing the needs of struggling students through an intervention program called WIN (What I Need).
“All students will be provided an intervention period of reading and/or math that will help them to be successful with the Common Core State Standards,” Rindfleisch wrote in the report.
New Groningen has 36 teachers and a student-teacher ratio of 15:1. About 27 percent of the students at the school come from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds, according to U.S. News and World Report.
