On December 11, the Bloomfield Township Fire Department (BTFD) Charities presented a check to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) from the annual “Fill The Boot” fundraiser. Stacey Breitlow, Account Manager Fire Fighter Partnerships for MDA, was present to accept on behalf of the organization.
“Fill The Boot” features firefighters and their family members volunteering to collect donations from residents at various locations such as parking lots and high-traffic businesses. Despite the wintery weather on November 26, 2025, BTFD Charities was able to raise $17,030 for MDA’s mission to empower the people they serve to live longer, more independent lives.
President of the BTFD Charities, Lieutenant Chris Hull, spoke about the importance of the event in terms of fundraising and community-building. “It’s great to see the people and let them see us. It builds relationships and often we run into residents that we have helped in the past. They are so grateful and happy to help our cause.”
Breitlow spoke about recent treatments for muscular dystrophy. “I’ve seen families with multiple kids with MD who are making great strides with new drugs and you can see the progress of the research.”
In addition to much-needed research, funds donated to MDA help support their Summer Camp program. Young individuals aged 8 to 17 with neuromuscular disease have the opportunity to attend these overnight camps around the U.S. - at no cost to their families. Michigan’s camp is held at Camp Cavell in Lexington, MI. There are also six MDA Care Centers in the state and over 9,000 individuals currently living with neuromuscular disease.
Hull spoke about the importance of these camps. “I’ve heard these kids talk about camp being one of the few times they feel normal. The go up in trees, they go on ziplines, they get to take rides on Harleys, and just have fun.”
Breitlow added that it’s a much-needed break for other family members as well. “You have brothers and sisters who get the attention they need and parents get respite.”
