G-A wrestling team places first
in East Jackson tournament

By Bruce Rolfe

The Galesburg-Augusta wrestling team has experienced some tough years when looking at overall results recently.

However first year coach Sam Blyveis and his team have a vision to move the program in a positive direction.

The team took a big step towards that goal by winning the East Jackson Team Tournament December 20 and was very competitive in a 45-35 loss to Climax-Scotts at G-A High School December 17.

G-A won the first place trophy at East Jackson with a 5-0 record. The Rams defeated Jonesville (48-25), Mendon (39-29), Ann Arbor Huron (58-15), Chelsea B Team, (48-30), and Walled Lake Western (42-41).

The first place trophy comes a week after the team earned a runnerup trophy at the Burton Richards Memorial Tournament at Eau Claire High School.

Blyveis said the school continues to research records but he said the last time G-A won any tournament trophy was in 2004.

G-A showed determination, winning the final match of the day by one point (42-41) with a last second pin over Walled Lake Western, which was also 4-0 entering the last match.

“Winning that tournament yesterday, and with it coming down to a last second pin to win by one point in the finals, did quite a bit for our team. Both in regards to their confidence as well as the team bonding. We did that while scratching three weights due to various injuries and other reasons. It was quite a feat, and the wrestlers knew it, and they rose to the occasion,” said Blyveis.

Blyveis said winning a trophy two straight weeks helps add to the culture he is trying to build.

“The expectation of winning brings harder work and dedication. The kids are starting to understand why we do what we do,” adds the first year G-A coach.

Jaxsen Ray, Colton Robertson and Donaven Tiffany all went 5-0 on the day at the East Jackson Tournament.

C-S wrestling coach Jason Wade, who stepped down as the C-S coach two years ago but was named head coach after Martin and C-S dissolved a co-op arrangement and Mike Reitz stepped down following last season, said he likes the direction G-A is heading after his team defeated the Rams 45-35.

“They’re a very well coached team. They’ve got some solid kids. I know they’ve got some kids that put some time into the offseason. A really good opponent and good team to see where we’re at,” said Wade.
