2026 ABA Alexander Awards to honor leaders expanding pathways to legal education

By American Bar Association

The Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers and Tampa-based Journey to Esquire will receive the American Bar Association Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline’s Alexander Awards during the inaugural Titans for Change Gala at the 2026 ABA Midyear Meeting on Feb. 7, in San Antonio, Texas.

The Alexander Awards recognize individuals and organizations demonstrating exceptional leadership in expanding educational pathways for underrepresented students — including racial and ethnic minorities, students with disabilities and LGBTQ+ students — and supporting success from education through law school and into the profession.

The awards commemorate Raymond Pace Alexander and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, pioneering African American scholars and legal trailblazers whose legacies continue to inspire excellence, equity and access in legal education.

The Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers (MABL), which will receive the Alexander Award, is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting and supporting the professional success of Black lawyers, judges and law students in Minnesota. Its mission includes advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession, empowering the Black legal community and addressing systemic inequities. The MABL Pathways Program is a core initiative focused on building and sustaining a pipeline of Black legal talent from college through early legal careers.

The Journey to Esquire® Scholarship & Leadership Program (JTE) operated by Diversity Access Pipeline, Inc. will receive the Rising Star Award. JTE, an intensive, year-long program, addresses the significant lack of diversity within the legal profession by supporting diverse third-year law students from Stetson University College of Law and Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

The “Titans for Change Gala: Celebrating Excellence, Impact and Pathways to the Profession” will unite the Alexander Awards with the Spirit of Excellence Award, presented by the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession, and the Impacto Award, presented by the ABA Commission on Hispanic Rights and Responsibilities, in a collective celebration of excellence and leadership.
