C-S falls short, coach emphasizes
effort needed entire game
While Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball coach Chip Paddock appreciated a fourth quarter effort that wiped away a 13-point deficit and created a one point lead in the span of 4:40, the Lady Panther coach emphasized a similar type of effort is needed the entire game if his team is going to realize long term goals following a 50-48 loss to Galesburg-Augusta December 30 at C-S High School
“We’ve got to show hustle for 32 minutes. It can’t be the last eight minutes of the game,” said Paddock.
“I told the girls, we’ve got to be ready to go from the tip. You can’t get down, seven, ten, 12 (points), whatever it was. I appreciate our effort and the way we fought back, but you’ve got to be ready to go right from the start,” adds the C-S coach.
Trailing by a 43-30 count following a Brooklyn James basket and free throw with 5:15 left, C-S came storming back.
Holly Talbert and Kendal Reitz teamed up to lead the fourth quarter surge, with each player scoring nine points in the frame.
A basket and triple moments later by Holly Talbert pulled C-S to within 43-35.
C-S forced a G-A turnover and moments later Kendal Reitz sank two big free throws with 3:05 left to reduce C-S’ deficit to 43-37.
Another G-A turnover followed by a Reitz basket and free throw after a foul with 2:34 left pulled C-S to within 43-40.
The two teams traded the next four baskets, however A Reitz basket with 1:12 remaining left the Rams clinging to a 47-46 lead.
C-S’ impressive defense forced another G-A turnover and Talbert buried a 15-footer from the left wing with 35 seconds left that gave C-S its first lead since the 6:25 mark of the second quarter, 48-47.
Grace Gibson restored the G-A lead for good with a pair of free throws with 23.9 seconds left.
C-S had an opportunity to tie or move back in front but turned the ball over with 2.9 seconds left.
G-A freshman Rayonna Alexander split a pair of free throws with one second left for the final margin.
G-A’s pressure defense frustrated C-S at times, helping the visitors to a 12-9 lead after one quarter and 28-21 at halftime.
C-S finished with 17 turnovers.
The Panthers left 11 potential points at the free throw line with a 9-for-20 performance.
Paddock felt the game came down to execution.
“There’s certain things we want to do and we’re not executing at a high level right now. Tip your cap to Galesburg-Augusta. They came with some energy. But we’ve got a team that should be executing at a high level and we’re not,” observed Paddock.
The Lady Panthers, who fell to 4-2 with the loss, have lost two straight close games entering the new calendar year, however Paddock feels his team can learn from both losses.
“We wanted a tougher non-conference schedule because hopefully we want to be somewhere special in March. But right now we’ve just got to focus on us. We’ve got to execute and just focus on us,” said Paddock.
Talbert led C-S in scoring with 19 points and Reitz added 11 points.
Annabelle Edwards had eight rebounds and Addy Reeves pitched in with seven steals.
G-A’s Gibson stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Alexander finished with 14 points.
