A major winter storm contributed to a massive pileup involving more than 100 vehicles on Interstate 196 in Zeeland Township Monday that shut down the expressway in both directions for nearly eight hours and left up to a dozen people injured.

Deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office were called to the wreck on I-196 near 64th Avenue at about 10:19 a.m. after receiving multiple reports of numerous crashes and slideoffs in the area. Multiple semi-trucks jackknifed, contributing to the pileup, Capt. Jake Sparks of the sheriff’s office said.

As many as 12 people were reported injured, but no fatalities occurred. Sheriff’s deputies worked with area ambulance and fire services to treat the injured and transport them to local hospitals. Zeeland Police and Michigan State Police assisted the sheriff’s office at the scene, Sparks said.

The expressway was reopened to traffic at about 6 p.m. An investigation into the pileup is continuing, Sparks said.

Buses from Hudsonville High School and MAX Transit were used to assist the sheriff’s office with transporting stranded motorists from the scene to Hudsonville High School on 32nd Avenue. Once at the school, they could summon assistance or schedule a ride to pick them up from the school cafeteria, Sparks said.

“The Sheriff's Office would like to thank the numerous law enforcement agencies, fire departments, ambulance and wrecker services, Hudsonville Public Schools and MAX (Transit) that assisted in the removal of patients, vehicles and motorists from the highway,” Sparks said. “The Sheriff's Office is also grateful for the numerous local businesses that donated food to emergency workers that were on-scene for over seven hours.”

The winter weather also led to the cancellation of all youth and adult recreation activities at Zeeland Recreation. The Zeeland Recreation facility closed at 4 p.m. In addition, Monday night’s Zeeland Board of Education meeting was also cancelled. That meeting has been rescheduled for next Monday at 6 p.m. at the board’s administrative offices, 183 W. Roosevelt Ave.

The winter storm also forced Ottawa County offices to close at 3 p.m. and the cancellation of a public hearing in Spring Lake on the proposed Ottawa County Community Mental Health Authority. That hearing has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. next Monday at the Spring Lake Community Center, 15549 Cleveland St.

Classes were cancelled Tuesday for Zeeland Public Schools and Zeeland Christian School.
