A 12-mile stretch of westbound Interstate 196 between Jenison and Zeeland was shut down for more than four hours early Tuesday morning after two semi-trucks slid off the highway and crashed into the ditch as accumulating snow continued to fall in West Michigan.

The crashes were reported about 1:40 a.m. One occurred near the 66-mile marker in Georgetown Township while the other took place was near the 59-mile marker in Zeeland Township, Sgt. Alex DeJong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Due to the location of the slide-offs and the need for tow trucks to pull the semis from the ditch, authorities shut down westbound I-196 from 44th Street (Exit 67) to Byron Road (Exit 55). The eastbound lanes remained open.

The trucks were pulled from the ditch and the expressway was opened to traffic shortly before 6 a.m., an Ottawa County central dispatch supervisor said.

The I-196 slide-offs came about a week after a 100-vehicle pileup on westbound

I-196 between Hudsonville and Zeeland Jan. 19 shut down the expressway in both directions for nearly eight hours and injured 12 people.
