PONTIAC, Mich., Jan. 29, 2026 — Today, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) joined community partners — HOPE Shelters, Lighthouse and Quest to Make a Change Charities — in order to distribute more than 550 sweatshirts and 200 winter hats provided by Glenn Schwartz. These three trusted local organizations provide frontline services and will ensure the clothing articles benefit the homeless communities in Pontiac. After the distribution, Carter issued the following statement:
“Michigan winters are unforgiving, and the recent stretch of extreme cold temperatures has made that reality impossible to ignore. For far too many of our neighbors in Pontiac, staying warm is unaffordable. As the cost of living continues to rise, families are facing higher rents, higher utility bills and higher prices for everyday necessities, all at the same time. When wages don’t keep pace, people are left making impossible choices: heat or groceries, rent or medicine, electricity or new clothes.
“This is about compassion and showing up for one another. No one in our community should be pushed to the brink just to stay warm. This moment calls for compassion. No one in Pontiac should have to face the cold alone.”
