A 59-year-old Zeeland woman was killed and two other people were hospitalized after a crash involving a semi-truck and trailer early Tuesday morning in Blendon Township.
The crash was reported at 5:14 a.m. at the intersection of 72nd Avenue and Port Sheldon Street.
An initial investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office determined that the semi-truck and trailer, driven by a 54-year-old man from Butler, Ky., was northbound on 72nd and failed to stop at the four-way stop at Port Sheldon. The semi struck a GMC Sierra that was eastbound on Port Sheldon on the passenger side of the vehicle. The Sierra was driven by a 56-year-old Zeeland man.
The crash caused both the semi-truck and the Sierra to land in the ditch on the northeast side of the intersection, Sgt. Tyler Van Doeselaar of the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The 59-year-old Zeeland woman, who was a passenger in the Sierra, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Sierra had to be extricated by Blendon Township firefighters, and was transported via Life EMS to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with critical injuries. Names of the two occupants of the Sierra were not released by the sheriff’s office.
The driver of the semi-truck was transported via Life EMS to Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His name was not released.
The crash shut down the intersection of 72nd and Port Sheldon for hours. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information that would help investigators is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
Responding agencies at the scene were the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Blendon Township Fire, Zeeland Township Fire and Life EMS.
