Zeeland Record
Mead Johnson Nutrition is asking the city of Zeeland to approve vacating the portion of North Division Street, north of Main Avenue, as part of its plans to modernize its infant formula manufacturing plant.
The City Council has referred the company’s request to the city’s Planning Commission, which is expected to consider the matter next Thursday.
“The portion of North Division Street in question is a dead-end street, and Mead Johnson owns property on all three sides of the segment proposed to be vacated,” city Community Development Director Tim Maday wrote in a memo.
Mead Johnson submitted its request to vacate North Division Feb. 6. In a letter to Maday, senior engineering manager Allan Barron wrote that the vacation will give the company “contiguous property along (East) Main Avenue, allowing for the planned expansion of our facility.”
Mead Johnson purchased several properties along Main last year, including Bethel Christian Reformed Church and the Cityside Townhouses, and had them rezoned for industrial use as part of the company’s planned $836 million modernization of its plant at 725 E. Main Ave.
Planning commissioners are expected to decide at its meeting next Thursday whether to schedule a public hearing on vacating North Division. While the city’s street vacation process allows for having a traffic study done on any street proposed for vacating, it’s unlikely that a study will be pursued because Mead Johnson already owns all the surrounding property.
The Planning Commission would have to recommend approval of vacating North Division, with final action coming from the City Council, Maday said.
