Professor Julian Davis Mortenson has been elected to membership in the American Law Institute (ALI), a prestigious distinction for judges, lawyers, and academics.
Mortenson is among 45 new members of ALI. He joins numerous other Michigan Law professors in the group, which works to modernize and improve the law in the United States.
“I’m honored by the chance to participate in the ALI’s important work,” Mortenson said. “It’s a remarkable assemblage of talent and experience with a venerable history of insight and influence, and I hope to live up to the example set by all those who are already members and everyone who has come before.”
Mortenson, the James G. Phillipp Professor of Law, is a legal historian, constitutional litigator, and award-winning teacher who specializes in the constitutional and political history of early America. He teaches constitutional law, presidential powers, administrative law, legislation and regulation, international law, and international commercial arbitration.
“I’m delighted to congratulate Professor Mortenson on his election to the American Law Institute,” said Neel U. Sukhatme, David A. Breach Dean of Law. “This recognition reflects the rigor, originality, and influence of his work as well as his deep commitment to teaching and the advancement of the law.”
ALI members—who come from all areas of the U.S. and many foreign countries—are chosen on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law.
The group’s principal activities involve developing and publishing “Restatements of the Law, Model Codes, and Principles of Law” for use in courts, legislatures, legal scholarship, and legal education.
“The election of new members is among the most important responsibilities of the Institute,” said ALI President David F. Levi.
“This distinguished group once again brings the reach and experience needed to help the ALI address emerging legal challenges while continuing to pursue its mission of clarifying, simplifying, and reforming the law. As I welcome these new members, I do so with great confidence in the institute’s future.”
