Zeeland Record
The city of Zeeland has a new fire/rescue chief.
The City Council Monday night unanimously approved a recommendation from Mayor Rick Van Dorp and a fire/rescue search committee to appoint Brad Deppe to the role of chief.
Deppe, who will begin his new duties March 23, comes to Zeeland from the city of Wyoming, where he has been a firefighter for more than 25 years. He is currently a captain/EMT for Wyoming fire. He replaces Ross Tibbets, who stepped down as fire/rescue chief in December of last year to take a similar position in neighboring Holland Township.
“This is exciting to me,” Deppe told council members. “This is a new, welcomed challenge for me. What is exciting is the people that I’ve met here already have been welcoming, have been kind and supportive. Any questions I’ve had have been answered right away. It’s one of those things that almost makes you feel like home. I’m excited to get started.”
Deppe, 44, said he was attracted to Zeeland by the community’s family-based environment. He also was familiar with the department itself.
“They have great people, they have a great system set up, and I look forward to continuing in that,” he said.
Van Dorp expressed confidence that Deppe will step into his new role quite easily.
“He’s ready to hit the ground running … Nothing’s going to surprise him,” the mayor said.
Van Dorp also noted that while Wyoming is a larger city, there are similarities to Zeeland in that both have large industrial bases.
The city received 23 applications for the chief’s job, and interviews were conducted with seven candidates – four in person and three by phone, City Manager Tim Klunder said.
Deppe will be paid a starting salary of $110,000 annually. He will also receive a full complement of benefits, including three weeks’ vacation to start, health and dental insurance, a defined contribution plan and retiree health savings contribution, Klunder said.
The search committee consisted of Van Dorp, Klunder, Interim Fire/Rescue Chief Mitch Harsevoort, Police Chief Tim Jungel and city human resources specialist Melanie Hellenthal.
According to city charter, the mayor appoints the fire/rescue chief with the consent of City Council. The position is subject to an annual reappointment process by City Council each May.
