Stephan was born in Buffalo, N.Y.
She graduated from Wells College in 1970, meeting her future husband Craig at a mixer in Ithaca, NY.
She began studies for a master’s degree in philosophy at Cornell, completing it at the University of Michigan.
After two years in East Lansing, Stephan and her family moved to Rochester, N.Y. She worked in the public relations department of Strong Memorial Hospital.
After moving back to Michigan, Stephan earned her JD from the University of Detroit Mercy.
She worked for many years as a children's advocate attorney for the Washtenaw County Juvenile court; she specialized in family law, guardianship, and in animal law; and volunteered at the C. S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.
A memorial gathering will be held in the spring in Buffalo, and her ashes interred in her family plot.
