City of Jackson resumes Martin Luther King Jr. Drive reconstruction this month

The City of Jackson has resumed Phase 2 of the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive reconstruction project, continuing planned infrastructure improvements between High Street and South Street.

• Phase 1 of the project, from Morrell Street to High Street, was substantially completed in November 2025.

• Phase 2 is scheduled for completion in November 2026.

This project represents a significant investment in neighborhood infrastructure, safety and long-term accessibility. Im-provements include full street reconstruction, replacement of water and sewer utilities, new street lighting, updated traffic signals, reconstructed sidewalks and driveway approaches, installation of a 10-foot shared-use path, and the addition of parking lanes on both sides of the street to increase convenient access to nearby businesses and properties.

Traffic and Access During Construction

During the initial phase of construction, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will be closed to southbound traffic while remaining open to northbound traffic to maintain residential and commercial driveway access within the work zone. Traffic patterns will be adjusted in later phases as work progresses, and updated information will be shared in advance.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on adjacent streets will remain open on either side of the construction area. Motorists traveling through the area should follow posted detours and plan for minor route adjustments during active construction.

Local businesses along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will remain open throughout construction.

Driveways will remain accessible most of the time. Temporary closures may occur when utility work or concrete placement is taking place directly in front of a property. Residents will receive advance notice of planned disruptions whenever possible.

Water Service and Utility Upgrades

As part of the project, the City will replace aging water, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure. Residents should expect brief, planned interruptions to water service during connection to the new water main. Notices will be provided at least one day in advance. Interruptions will typically occur on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Replacing these systems now helps reduce the risk of future service disruptions and supports reliable infrastructure for years to come.

Staying Informed

The City is committed to keeping residents informed throughout construction. Weekly updates will be shared through the City’s Mass Alerts notification system and by email.

Residents can sign up at: https://www.cityofjackson.org/portal?portalpage=notifications?tab=alerts

When setting up preferences, be sure to select “City Road Construction Updates.”

Residents who previously signed up for alerts through the former “Code Red” system will need to resubmit their information and manage their preferences in the new Mass Alerts system.

Questions regarding construction may be directed to the Engineering Department at (517) 788-4160.

The City appreciates residents’ patience as this work moves forward and remains committed to strengthening infrastructure, improving safety, and enhancing quality of life throughout the community.
