City of Jackson launches community process to create next Master Plan

The City of Jackson is beginning the process of creating its next Master Plan, a long-term vision that will guide how the community grows, develops, and invests in its future.

Master plans are typically updated every 10 to 20 years and serve as a comprehensive strategic framework for land use, zoning, development, infrastructure investment, and overall community priorities. The plan helps ensure that decisions made today support the long-term success of the city and its neighborhoods.

The planning process will take approximately 12 to 16 months and will be led by staff from the City of Jackson Community Development Department, along with planning consultants from Planning Next. The process will be guided by the City’s Planning Commission and shaped by input from residents, businesses, and community stakeholders.

Community participation will be central to the success of this effort. “Master planning is one of the most important opportunities a community has to step back and ask what kind of city we want to become,” said John O’Connor, Planning Director and Zoning Administrator for the City of Jackson. “It allows us to bring residents, businesses, and local leaders together to imagine the future of Jackson and build a roadmap that reflects the hopes and priorities of the entire community.”

A Master Plan Steering Committee is currently being formed to help guide the planning process. This volunteer working group will meet approximately once per month throughout the project to discuss ideas, explore planning topics, and provide valuable insight as the plan develops.

“Strong communities are built when residents help shape the vision for where they live,” said Cory Mays, Grant Coordinator for the City of Jackson. “This process gives people a seat at the table to share their perspectives, identify opportunities, and help create a future for Jackson that reflects the needs of the people who call this city home.”

Community members interested in helping guide the process are encouraged to apply to serve on the steering committee.

The city encourages residents, business owners, and community partners of all ages to participate in the process and help shape the next chapter of Jackson’s future.
