The city of Zeeland’s parks and recreation plan will soon be getting an update.

The City Council March 16 approved a professional services contract with MCSA Group to work with the Cemetery and Parks Commission on a planning document that will guide parks projects in the city for the next five years. The city will pay no more than $22,000 for the study.

MCSA worked with the city on its last five-year parks and recreation plan in 2022, Assistant City Manager Kevin Plockmeyer said.

“The city’s current plan has expired and must be updated in order to remain eligible for several Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant programs,” Plockmeyer wrote in a memo. “Maintaining an up-to-date plan also provides the city with a strategic framework for planning, prioritizing, and funding improvements to parks, recreation facilities, trails, and open spaces.”

The most significant change in the plan is how the city and MCSA Group will go about engaging with residents. Instead of a series of public input meetings, which were sparsely attended in the 2022 update, the city will distribute an online public input survey.

“This approach allows residents to participate more conveniently and helps gather feedback from a broader cross section of the community regarding park use, recreation priorities, and desired improvements,” Plockmeyer wrote.

The plan update will begin with a project startup meeting with the Cemetery and Parks Commission next month. The public survey is expected to be distributed in July.
