Applicants sought for State Bar board


The Michigan Supreme Court is accepting applications from attorneys interested in serving on the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners.

Applicants must have a law degree from an accredited law school and be members of the State Bar.

There is one court-appointed vacancy, a three-year term that begins later this year. It is an unpaid volunteer position.

Interested applicants must submit a resume or CV formatted in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF, along with consent to a personal background investigation, via email to jobapps@courts.mi.gov. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, May 6.

In lieu of a cover letter, applicants have been asked to respond to the following questions:

• Have you previously served on the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners? If so, when?

• What experience do you have that makes you qualified for this appointment?

• Why do you want to be appointed to the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners?


Panel discussion featured
at MCBA spring meeting


The Michigan Creditors Bar Association will host its Spring Member Dinner on Thursday, May 14, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak. 

The dinner program will feature a panel discussion composed of judges and clerks, focusing on issues that matter most to MCBA members. 

E-filing remains among the topics to be discussed. 

The evening will begin with networking at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the program at 6:45 p.m.

Webinar to update sentencing guidelines


The State Appellate Defender Office and the Criminal Defense Resource Center will present the webinar “Sentencing Guidelines Updates” on Tuesday, May 19, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.  

This training will provide a summary of recent and authoritative sentencing guidelines scoring decisions and an overview of some of the issues associated with guidelines scoring.

The featured speaker is Jacqueline McCann who serves as litigation support counsel at the Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System. She is a former SADO assistant defender and is the principal author of the latest edition of the “Sentencing Guidelines Annotated.”
