Voters said yes to renewing a non-homestead millage for Zeeland Public Schools and a fire compensation levy for Zeeland Township at the polls May 5.

About 61 percent of voters who reside in the Zeeland school district approved renewal of the 18-mill, one-year levy that is assessed to businesses, rental homes, vacation homes and other properties that are not a family’s primary residence.
The final vote count, taking in totals from both Ottawa and Allegan counties, was 2,948 yes to 1,993 no.

The non-homestead levy tax does not apply to owner-occupied homes.

Meanwhile, township voters easily approved renewing a 0.9857-mill tax that goes toward paying firefighters through 2029. About 74 percent of those casting ballots voted yes on the renewal – 1,146 yes to 398 no.

The township’s fire compensation millage is separate from its fire operations levy, which was renewed by voters in November 2024.

The non-homestead millage is expected to generate $12,504,064 for ZPS during the 2027-28 school year, representing about 11-12 percent of the district’s annual revenue.

“We are grateful to the Zeeland community for supporting our operational millage,” Superintendent Rod Hetherton said. “This allows us to continue the day-to-day work of serving students and providing excellent learning opportunities across our district. Zeeland is a place where strong community support and high expectations come together for kids.”

Support for the non-homestead renewal was strongest in the city of Zeeland as well as in the portions of Holland Township (Precincts 5, 9 and 12) that are part of ZPS. About 70 percent of voters in the city approved the levy, 665-282, while about 68.5 percent of those casting ballots in Holland Township voted in favor, 997-457, according to county election records.

The renewal passed in three of the four precincts in Zeeland Township, with a total vote count of 873 yes votes to 615 no.

Township Fire Chief Brock Bruce thanked voters for their support of the compensation renewal.

“This continued investment helps ensure Zeeland Township residents receive dependable emergency services from well-trained full-time and paid-on-call firefighters,” Bruce said.
