St. Clair County prosecutor appointed to prosecute matter involving Macomb County district judge

Attorney General Dana Nessel has appointed St. Clair County Prosecutor Michael Wendling to prosecute charges for a matter involving 37th District Court Judge John Chmura.

Earlier this month, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office referred a criminal warrant request involving Chmura to the Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC) for reassignment.

Lucido said the referral was necessary to avoid any appearance of impropriety, as Chmura presides over cases brought by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office seeks to ensure there is no perception of preferential treatment or influence in matters pending before the court.

Maintaining impartiality and public confidence in the judicial process is paramount to the office.

On Monday, an Order of Appointment was issued by Danielle Hagaman-Clark, Criminal Bureau Chief for Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

The order appoints Wendling to "perform all duties of the prosecuting attorney hereinafter on this file" related to Judge John Chmura.
