The Zeeland East varsity baseball team entered the week controlling its own destiny for an O-K Black Conference championship.

The Chix held a one-game lead over Unity Christian and Spring Lake entering play on Monday – East at 13-2 in conference play with the Crusaders and Lakers both at 12-3.

East was to open a title-deciding three-game series with Unity Christian at home Monday, but heavy thunderstorms resulted in that doubleheader being postponed. That doubleheader was to be made up Tuesday, with the third and final game of the series at Unity Christian today.

Spring Lake opened a three-game series with West Monday with a 9-0 victory. The Dux were to host the Lakers for a doubleheader Tuesday.

East swept a three-game series from West last week to move into sole possession of first place in the Black. The Chix took both ends of a doubleheader May 12, 2-1 and 12-2, and followed that with a 10-7 win over the Dux last Thursday.

The opening game of the series produced a classic pitchers’ duel between East’s Mason Raade and West’s Logan Nash. Both pitchers went the distance – Raade spread out seven West hits, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter, while Nash allowed six hits and did not allow an earned run.

The Chix drew first blood in the fourth inning, when Tyler Chandler singled, took second on an error, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a passed ball. The Dux tied it in the fifth on a two-out RBI double by Jace Pyper.

East scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth on a two-out outfield error that allowed Chandler to score.

Ethan Campbell led East with two hits in the game, while Pyper and Peyton Koetje had two hits each for West.

In the second game, East jumped on West for four runs in the first, with Jack Toner capping the uprising with a two-run double. The Chix added two runs in each of the next three innings to break the game open.

Raade led the Chix with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Campbell had three hits. Toner drove in three runs while Joseph Mireles knocked in two more.

Caden Hunderman gained the pitching win for East, going the first four innings and allowing two hits and one earned run.

In the series finale last Thursday, East jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, as Raade delivered a key RBI single and the Chix capitalized on a pair of West errors.

But the Dux battled back, tying the game at 5-5 when Pyper blasted a three-run homer off Gavin Weighmink in the fifth. East regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs, with Zeek Ramadhani coming through with an RBI single.
Toner then helped the Chix put the game away in the sixth with a two-run single that highlighted a three-run inning.

Campbell had another strong performance on the mound to start the game for East, striking out 10 and allowing just one run and three hits over four innings of work. Ryan Kuzma led the Chix offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Raade, Toner and Ramadhani each drove in two runs.

Pyper went 3-for-4, including his three-run homer, to lead the West attack, while Jakson Keeler had a triple and a double.

The Zeeland West varsity softball team had its hitting shoes on May 12 in its rivalry doubleheader with Zeeland East, pounding out 26 hits in sweeping the Chix, 7-3 and 15-10.

The sweep solidified the Dux hold on second place in the O-K Black Conference at 8-2 in conference play. West was to close out conference play on Tuesday at home against Spring Lake, and entered the week with a record of 16-8.

In the opener, East got the early jump, scoring single runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead in the middle of the second. A Cora Ter Haar single and an outfield error produced a run in the first and Leah Keur delivered a two-out RBI double in the second.

But West came back in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Megan Strabbing, who had a big day at the plate, blasted a solo home run to start the rally. A ground ball knocked in a second run and an East error gave West the lead at 3-2.

Jerzee Selby hit a sacrifice fly for East in the top of the third to tie the game, but the Dux responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take control. Karissa Oetman hit a sacrifice fly, followed later by Brynn Laarman’s two-run single and a Lauren Ensing RBI single.

East loaded the bases in the top of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but West pitcher Sadie Kragt got Bella Urivez to fly out to left to end the game. The Chix outhit the Dux 11-9, but left nine runners on base.

Strabbing went 3-for-4 at the plate while Laarman and Ensing each knocked in two runs for West. Kragt struck out eight in the circle and helped her own cause with a pair of hits.

Ter Haar led the Chix with a 3-for-4 performance, while Keur, Megan Kuzma and Jordynn Berens each had two hits. Keur also set an East school record with her 27th stolen base of the season.

The Dux put on a power display in game two, led by Strabbing and Oetman. In the first inning, Strabbing singled in a run, then Oetman blasted a two-run homer to left for 3-0 lead.

Strabbing doubled in a run during a four-run second for West, then slammed home runs in back-to-back innings – a two-run shot in the fifth and a three-run blast in the sixth as the West lead grew to 15-3. She finished the game 4-for-5 with seven RBIs.

Bri Kamer also had four hits in the game for the Dux, scored four runs and knocked in three.

East rallied late to make it interesting, scoring four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.

Berens led the Chix with four RBIs, while Summer Chatman walked in all five of her plate appearances, scoring three runs and stealing two bases.

Last Friday, East pounded West Ottawa 22-9 behind a 16-hit attack. The Chix also took advantage of nine Panther errors.

East built an early 12-1 lead, but West Ottawa got back in the game with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Chix sealed the run-rule win with a 10-run uprising in the top of the fifth.

Kuzma went 3-for-4, including a homer and a double, scored three runs and drove in three for East, while Keur also went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, four runs scored and two stolen bases. Four other players knocked in two runs apiece.
