On Thursday, May 21, following a one-week jury trial, a Macomb County jury found Lewinski guilty as charged of the following offenses:
• Homicide – Murder – First-Degree - Premeditated, punishable by life without parole
• Dead Bodies – Disinterment and Mutilation, a 10-year felony
• Concealing the Death of an Individual, a 5-year felony
The trial was held before Circuit Court Judge Rachel Rancilio. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Carmen DeFranco prosecuted the case on behalf of the People.
Lewinski has been held without bond at the Macomb County Jail since July 30, 2021. He will be sentenced by Judge Rancilio on Tuesday, July 14, at 9 a.m.
In December 2020, Lewinski strangled his girlfriend inside his home and left her body there following her death. He initially placed the victim’s body in a bathtub before later moving it to the basement. Over the following months, Lewinski removed portions of the victim’s remains in an effort to conceal and dispose of the body. The victim’s remains were ultimately discovered in the basement by Lewinski’s family members on July 27, 2021, after Lewinski was hospitalized the previous day.
“After five years of litigation, appeals, and court proceedings that reached both the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court, justice has finally been secured in this case. The defendant’s conviction, as charged, including first-degree murder reflects the unwavering commitment of prosecutors, investigators, and the victim’s loved ones, who endured years of delays while continuing to seek accountability.
“No verdict can undo the profound loss suffered by the victim’s family, but we hope this outcome brings them a measure of peace and closure after an extraordinarily long and difficult journey through the justice system. Our office remains steadfast in pursuing justice, no matter how complex or lengthy the process may be,” said Lucido.
