Jury convicts man as charged, including first-degree murder

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido has announced that Matthew Lewinski, a 42-year-old man from Clinton Township, was convicted as charged by a jury of first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the death of 52-year-old Jerri Winters, his former girlfriend.

On Thursday, May 21,  following a one-week jury trial, a Macomb County jury found Lewinski guilty as charged of the following offenses:

• Homicide – Murder – First-Degree - Premeditated, punishable by life without parole
• Dead Bodies – Disinterment and Mutilation, a 10-year felony
• Concealing the Death of an Individual, a 5-year felony

The trial was held before Circuit Court Judge Rachel Rancilio.

Lewinski has been held without bond at the Macomb County Jail since July 30, 2021. He will be sentenced by Judge Rancilio on July 14.

In December 2020, Lewinski strangled his girlfriend inside his home and left her body there following her death. He initially placed the victim’s body in a bathtub before later moving it to the basement.

Over the following months, Lewinski removed portions of the victim’s remains in an effort to conceal and dispose of the body.

The victim’s remains were ultimately discovered in the basement by Lewinski’s family members on July 27, 2021, after Lewinski was hospitalized the previous day.
