Ms. Howard died on May 13, 2026, just days before her scheduled release. Her family has publicly alleged that the prison failed to provide necessary medical treatment and medication related to her schizophrenia and left her in severe distress prior to her death. Her passing has intensified ongoing concerns regarding conditions, medical care, and oversight at Michigan’s only women’s prison.
Just four days after Howard’s death, a second incarcerated woman, Rebecca “Becky” Fackler, 57, also died at the same facility, further highlighting public scrutiny surrounding the prison’s medical care, emergency response procedures, and inmate welfare. The two deaths occurring within days of one another have promoted renewed calls for accountability and independent review of conditions inside the facility.
“Ms. Howard’s family deserves answers, accountability, and transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding Khaira’s death,” stated Tim Holland, lead attorney at FallLaw.com. “We intend to conduct a thorough investigation into the treatment Khaira Howard received while in custody and pursue all appropriate legal remedies on behalf of her loved ones.”
