G-A softball team falls to C-S
in cross river rivalry game

The Galesburg-Augusta varsity softball team dropped its fourth straight Cross River Rivalry game to Climax-Scotts May 22, this time 12-0 in six innings at G-A High School.

The Lady Panthers have won the traveling trophy five out of the six years the two rivals have been playing the Cross River Rivalry game with two games being cancelled because of rain and the other because of covid.

The two schools started the Cross River Rivalry series playing doubleheaders in softball in 2018 and 2019 with the team winning the first game declared winners of the traveling trophy.

The Rams couldn’t overcome 10 fielding errors and a 10 hit attack by Climax-Scotts.

The Lady Rams struggled at the plate, coming up with just two hits, singles by Caitlyn Valadez and Piper Snodderly.

Ten G-A errors led to nine unearned runs for C-S.

Kaylin Wetzel suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits, three earned runs, four walks and she had four strikeouts in six innings pitched.

G-A took a 10-21 record into the districts May 30 against Kalamazoo Christian in a noon clash at Lawton.

Comstock will play the winner of the Lawton-Parchment game (played May 26) in the other semifinal game May 30 at 10 a.m. and the district championship will follow at noon.

G-A Sweeps Comstock
The Lady Rams enjoyed strong pitching in both games of a doubleheader May 20 for a sweep over Comstock at G-A High School.

Kaylin Wetzel pitched a three-inning no hitter in a 17-0 win in the second game after pitching a four-inning one hitter in a 16-1 win in the first game.

Wetzel faced 15 batters in the first game and struck out five. She did not allow a walk.

Wetzel struck out nine Colts in the second game, throwing 35 of her 44 pitches for strikes.

Lili Jones, who had a double, had two hits in the first game, and Caitlyn Valadez hit a home run and drove in two runs.

The Rams managed just five hits in the second game but took advantage of five Comstock errors that led to six unearned runs.

Piper Snodderly had two of G-A’s five hits including a double. She drove in one run.

Cassopolis Takes Two from G-A

The Lady Rams managed just three hits overall in a pair of losses to Cassopolis May 19 on the road.
G-A was held without a hit in a 12-0 loss in the first game and the team came up with three hits in a 10-2 setback in the nightcap.
G-A committed 10 errors that led to eight unearned runs.
Kaylee Bastian suffered the loss on the mound.
Lili Jones, Caitlyn Valadez and Ava Schelb each had one hit in the second game.

Three Rams ready for track state finals


Galesburg-Augusta High School qualified three members of the boys and girls track team for the Division 3 MHSAA State Finals May 30 at Kent City High School.
Junior Patrick Armock qualified in the discus throw and 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Jenisyn Klimp qualified in the 400-meter run, and junior Ellesa Callender qualified in the discus competition.


G-A’s Alex Krugh rough on Panthers

The Galesburg-Augusta varsity baseball team continued its dominance in the Cross River Rivalry game series with Climax-Scotts, downing the Panthers 6-0 May 22 at G-A High School.

G-A has won five out of the six rivalry games between the two schools, with two games being cancelled because of rain and the other because of covid.

G-A’s Alex Krugh not only stymied Climax-Scotts on the mound, the Ram junior did heavy damage at the plate as well.

Krugh improved to 8-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.73 by holding C-S to two hits.

The Ram pitching standout racked up 11 strikeouts in seven innings, giving him 107 whiffs over 47 and two-thirds innings pitched entering play May 26.

Krugh had a big day at the plate as well, banging out three hits, including a double and he drove in three runs.

G-A, now 12-9, broke a scoreless tie with a five-run third inning.

The Rams will play the winner of the Kalamazoo Christian-Comstock game May 30 in the district tournament at 10 a.m. at Kalamazoo Christian.

G-A Holds off Cassopolis

The Rams held off a Cassopolis rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to record a 7-5 win May 19 at Cassopolis.

G-A scored a big run in the top of the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk to Carter Simmons to take a 7-3 lead.

The Rangers pulled to within 7-5 and had a runner on first and the tying runner at the plate with two outs, however reliever Coleson Blake was able to coax a pop out to second baseman Carter Simmons for the save.

Ayden Maine was the winning pitcher, pitching the first six and one-third innings. He allowed four hits, one earned run, 2 walks and he struck out eight.
