C-S graduate competes in national event

By Bruce Rolfe

While Climax-Scotts High School graduate Gabe Walliczek was hoping for a little better performance at the Adidas Track Nationals June 18-21 in Greensboro, North Carolina in the discus competition, the 2026 graduate is viewing the opportunity as a positive experience.

Each participant had three throws. The top nine advanced to the finals for three more throws.

Walliczek, who was the Division 4 State Champion in the discus in May, only had one throw recorded however because of two fouls on the other three throws, recording a throw of 142’9” on his first throw. He said he stepped on the ring on the second attempt and on the last throw he had a sector foul.

The C-S graduate finished in 22nd place among 24 throwers.

Walliczek was competing on a national stage against other elite throws and felt he wasn’t prepared enough.

He also stepped on a nail a week before the competition, preventing him from throwing until June 17 without too much pain, just five days before he competed.

“When we got down here it was hard to find a place to practice a couple days before the meet. It was the hottest weather I competed in and I was feeling jittery. My warm ups weren’t the greatest and I think it had an  effect on my confidence. It was overall a good time,” said Walliczek.

C-S track coach Dave Lodes agreed Walliczek didn’t have his best throw but still felt it was a great experience for the C-S graduate.

Walliczek qualified for the Adidas Track Nationals in the discus competition with an amazing throw of  175’4” at the Southwest Michigan Throwers Classic May 11 at Schoolcraft.

Walliczek, who owns the school record in the discus, recorded a throw of 170’9” at the state finals meet. His throw was the fourth best throw out of all four divisions at the May 30 MHSAA State Finals.
