Zeeland Record
One day after receiving the endorsement of President Donald Trump in Michigan’s gubernatorial race, U.S. Rep. John James visited Zeeland June 23.
James spoke at a morning prayer breakfast at the Howard Miller Community Center. The two-term congressman from metro Detroit drew a parallel between Trump’s endorsement and the story of the Old Testament prophet Nehemiah, when he went to approach the Persian king Artaxerxes about getting resources and promises of safe passage to return to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem after the exile of the Israelites to Babylon.
“He got the endorsement of Artaxerxes for safe passage back to Judea,” James said. “(On Monday), I got the endorsement of President Trump for safe passage through this primary.”
In his endorsement posted on his Truth Social account, the president wrote that James “has proven he has the Courage and Wisdom to deliver strong results for the incredible people of his wonderful State, and our Nation.”
“John James has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Governor of Michigan — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!” Trump posted on his account.
A graduate of West Point, an Army helicopter pilot during Operation Iraqi Freedom and a business owner, James was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 after two previous failed runs for the U.S. Senate. He spoke about the experience of running a business that was started by his father with “a truck, a trailer and no excuses.”
“Economic development is not about brick and mortar. It’s about flesh and blood, and knowing what it takes to bring people together to accomplish a mission,” he said.
James is one of three remaining candidates seeking the Republican nomination for governor in the Aug. 4 primary. The others are former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and businessman Perry Johnson. Another potential hopeful, state Senate Republican leader Aric Nesbitt, suspended his campaign shortly after Trump announced he was endorsing James, and is now supporting James’ run for governor.
“He is the best candidate to defeat the Whitmer-Benson agenda of higher taxes, higher prices, woke policies and incompetent leadership,” Nesbitt wrote on his X account on June 23. “A divided primary only helps Democrats. It’s time to unite.”
The Democratic primary on Aug. 4 pits Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson against Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.
“There will be people who come against us in our efforts to rebuild our state,” James said. “But there’s hope. Because we have leaders with that vision. We already have people to help us rebuild our state.
“The best people to help us rebuild Zeeland are – what? - people from Zeeland. The best people to help us rebuild Kalamazoo are people from Kalamazoo. Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Detroit, Marquette, Flint, Traverse City, Alpena, everywhere in between.
We just need leadership with a clear vision, a passion for service and an understanding of who we serve and whose we are.”
