Given out annually, the NFPA Fire Marshal of the Year Award recognizes a fire code enforcement professional who demonstrates outstanding leadership in achieving code compliance through education, community collaboration, and proactive risk-reduction efforts.
“When talking about our first responders, I always say we have the best in the state, if not the entire country, and now one of our own, Fire Marshal Jared Nisch, is further proving me right,” said Schor. “Jared Nisch has served this community well for many years, and this award is a testament to his dedication to our community.”
Lansing Fire Chief Carrie Edwards-Clemons stated, “Jared Nisch’s selection as the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Marshal of the Year is a significant honor for the department and community. This recognition reflects the City of Lansing’s commitment to community risk reduction through collaboration among governmental partners, residents, the business community, and nonprofit organizations.”
According to the NFPA, Nisch has brought a proactive, data-driven approach to fire prevention, expanding the role of the fire marshal’s office beyond traditional code enforcement to better meet community needs. His work has included launching the Lansing Fire Department’s first comprehensive smoke alarm initiative and developing targeted fire and life safety education for older adults, one of Lansing’s highest-risk populations.
Through public events, direct community engagement, and the creation of an interactive inflatable fire safety house, Nisch has helped modernize fire safety education for people of all ages in his community, strengthening the department’s connection with residents.
Nisch was honored at an awards gala as part of the annual NFPA Conference & Expo on June 21.
