When the time comes for a veteran firefighter to step down, one common reason often heard is “it’s a young man’s game now.”
Despite his age of 48 years old, a physical condition he was born with and a torn meniscus that has bothered him for week he had surgically repaired last week, Climax resident Russ Audette is going against the trend, living out one of his childhood ambitions of becoming a firefighter.
Audette, a member of the Climax Township Fire Department since last November, completed the arduous requirements of the Firefighter 1 and 2 Academy in June. After he completes Medical First Responder requirements, he will be removed from probationary status on the Climax Township Fire Department, pending Township Board approval.
His brother Chris, is also a member of the Climax Township Fire Department, joining the local fire department in 2000.
2006 C-S Graduate Enjoys Smooth Career Take Off
A 2006 Climax-Scotts High School graduate who had aspirations of becoming an elementary school teacher, has switched gears and is enjoying a pleasant take off to a new career.
Jordan Torrance, the son of Scott and Janet Torrance of Climax, is currently an air plane pilot for SkyWest Airlines.

Following an absence of nearly 15 years, a summer parade returned to Scotts in a big way Saturday, drawing many participants and a large crowd.
Accompanied by blue, sunny skies, the streets and corners along the main route on 36th St. in Scotts were lined with parade watchers.
Intruders Get Away With Undetermined Amount Of Cash At Farm Bureau
An undetermined amount of cash was stolen from the Battle Creek Farm Bureau, Climax branch 14325 East OP Ave. Climax Township following a breaking and entering incident that took place either late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Deputy Tom Harmsen said he believes more than one subject entered the premises after snapping the locks off a window in the rear of the building.
Branch Manager Greg Armstrong said the subjects entered the room where the safe was, damaging it heavily to get to the cash.
Armstrong said a nearby resident in the area said it appeared everything looked normal at about 10 p.m. Tuesday evening and the incident was discovered when the first employee arrived Wednesday at 7 a.m.
Putting Land Into PDR Today Was Practice Previous Generations Felt Was Important
Most of the significant factors surrounding the 531 acres of land Larry and Brigette Leach put into a PDR program Friday at Avalon Farms in Climax were obvious. At the top, it assures the pristine farm land will remain in agricultural use of some type; the agreement was the 50th in the state since the program began in 1995; and it was the first one in Kalamazoo County.
But perhaps even more important to the Leach family is they are carrying out similar ideas and practices previous generations felt were important.
Climax Is Subject For B.C. Art Center Students
If you saw a person sitting in front of your home or business sketching or painting on a pad of paper earlier this week, don’t be too alarmed.
A group of seven students and their instructor from the Battle Creek Art Center used various buildings, homes and other areas in Climax to use as their drawing subjects this week as part of a yearly class that takes students out into various small communities for sketching opportunities.

While one of the qualities of a greyhound dog is its speed, Richard Smelker, of Dearborn hopes his 550-mile bicycle trip through 37 cities in northern Indiana and Michigan, including a stop in Climax Township, will help raise public awareness that could help lead to slowing down the rate the friendly dogs are destroyed each year.

Eberstein Motor Sales, of Climax, has been awarded membership in the highly select “Top 200 Club” of Hudson dealers, according to an announcement by N. K. VanDerzee, vice-president in charge of sales, Hudson Motor Car Company, Detroit.
The award was made following a national retail sales competition in which 2,300 Hudson dealers participated. Robert Eberstein whose outstanding sales records placed the company among the “Top 200” dealers, will be guests of the Hudson Motor Car Company at the second annual Jamboree in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, July 24-25.
Members will be entertained in a two-day program at the luxurious Greenbrier, one of America’s finest resort hotels.

The Annual meeting of Climax School Dist, No.1 Fr. was held last Monday evening. The reading of the minutes, secretary and treasurers report was received and accepted without comment after which the letter received from the state, and published recently in the Crescent was discussed how the changes recommended by the State could be made, etc. Action was finally taken to spend no more money on the present primary building and to call a district meeting for Monday, evening July 26th at 7:30 to discuss a new school building.
