Former Milan resident Martha Churchill died July 10 in Adrian, at the age of 75.
Churchill graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1969. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1973, majoring in Journalism and Anthropology.
Churchill worked as a newspaper reporter, then earned her law degree from Cooley Law School in Lansing in 1979. She was the first law review editor at Cooley Law School.
She tried cases in Detroit in Wayne County Circuit Court and U.S. District Court.
In 1990, she practiced environmental law in downtown Chicago, then worked in a law office in Roswell, New Mexico.
Churchill returned to Milan in 1998. She set up a law office on Main Street and served 16 years on the Milan City Council.
She wrote several published books about Milan local history and numerous history essays for local papers.
In 2014, the Travel Channel put Milan history on national television, featuring Churchill. She explained that a Milan family stole money on Wall Street in New York, then built the Hack House in 1888 with their ill-gotten gains.
