Many 4-H members who auction their livestock at the Kalamazoo County Fair earmark proceeds for college or other anticipated future expenses.
But Clara Gibson, the daughter of Darren and Kali Gibson of Fulton, had another idea.
Clara, a Fulton Lucky Clover 4-H member, decided she wanted to donate all of the proceeds from her two animals at the Kalamazoo County Fair auction August 7 to go towards a recovery fund for long time family friend Grant Piper.
Piper suffered a traumatic injury recently and faces a long road of recovery.
Kali Gibson said Henry, Clara’s sheep, was purchased by Lyster Exteriors for $10,000.
Kali said her daughter’s pig was donated back to resell and sold for $20 a pound to Carlton Equipment for $4,350.
Clara, who will be in the third grade this fall at the C-S Elementary School, has known Grant Piper her entire life.
When asked what motivated her to donate the proceeds to the long time family friend, Clara told her mother, “because it’s Grant. I love him.”
“He (Grant) hung out with her uncles so he became like an honorary Uncle Grant. Same with Grant’s brother. So Clara is like one of their own nieces,” said Clara’s mother Kali.
Clara’s mother said when she learned her daughter wanted to donate the proceeds from her animals to Grant’s recovery fund she was very pleased.
“I think as a parent your only goal in life is to raise kind, caring human beings and I think we’re doing a pretty good job at that,” said Kali.
Kali said the large audience at the auction was pretty emotional when they learned that Clara was donating all of the proceeds to the Grant Piper Recovery Fund.
“Every one was in tears. I was crying. The Pipers were crying. The audience was crying,” said Clara’s mother.

There was a sloppy Joe benefit dinner for Piper at the Climax-Scotts American Legion Post #465 August 14.
