The Index welcomes Jennifer Holbrook-Fish as its news editor this week. 

Holbrook-Fish joins the newsroom and will be taking over editorial duties from Troy Tennyson, who is transitioning to the sports editor role. 

While Holbrook-Fish comes to the Index with little formal journalism training, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong work ethic. 

After spending much of her school years in Grass Lake, Hol­brook-Fish graduated from Stockbridge High School in 2013.  

After graduation, Holbrook­Fish jumped right into the work­force, where she spent time bar­tending, waiting tables and working as a cashier before tak­ing a job as a quality auditor at Knauf Insulation in Albion where she worked for five years.  

While at Knauf, Holbrook­Fish met her soon-to-be husband Nicholas Fish, who also worked with the company, before marry­ing in November 2020.  

Holbrook-Fish’s family grew exponentially on that November day as she welcomed three stepchildren into her family, in­cluding her stepson Mason (now 15 years old), and stepdaughters Tiffany (14 years old), and Skyler (10 years old).  

Not long after, Holbrook­Fish added two children, Connor (who is now 5) and Cooper (who is now 4), completing her family of seven. After the birth of her children, Holbrook-Fish took the opportunity to be a stay-at­home mom before the allure of the world of journalism came calling. 

“My neighbor, (part-time Index photographer) Torri Bal­lentine, told me there was an opening for a position at the Index, so I sent in my resume and a written application and I got an interview,” Holbrook­Fish said. “After the interview, I was offered the job and I just got so excited about the possibili­ties, so I took the job.” 

In thinking about joining the Index and taking over the re­sponsibilities of one of Homer’s oldest and most public jobs, Holbrook-Fish shared her ex­citement for the challenge and shared her optimism for what the next year brings. 

“I promise to the readers that even though I have never been in journalism, I will take this job and responsibility very serious­ly. I will absorb everything I can from the community and all the people around me. People are my passion; I love people and their stories, I love to tell their tales. I so appreciate the people of Homer, Litchfield and Tekon­sha taking a chance on me and giving me the chance to run something so important to so many people.”  

Holbrook-Fish calls Homer home and looks forward to mak­ing sure the people you see every day walking down the street, at the store, or at the park remain the main focus of her hometown newspaper. 

In her free time, Holbrook­Fish likes to read; visit museums (she really enjoys the Detroit In­stitute of Art) and loves going to farmers’ markets, antique and thrift shops. Holbrook-Fish also loves to crochet, cook and bake.  

Holbrook-Fish wants readers of the Index to know that she takes her new job very seriously and she will do her very best from day one to keep the Index providing quality community journalism.
