The St. Joe River Lodge & Retreat in Litchfield is planning to open later this month, but will hold an open house Thursday to give area residents a sneak peek at the unique facility designed to address a shortage of overnight housing accommodations in the area.
The open house will run from 5-7 p.m. with punch and desserts available. The lodge is located at the former golf course and restaurant building on M-99, just north of downtown Litchfield.
The lodge will also provide a site for various social events, such as small weddings, receptions, class reunions, showers, birthday parties, holiday gatherings, graduation parties and much more.
“We think overall this is a unique venue that can fill a lot of needs,” said Dave Tefft, who owns the lodge along with his wife Candy. “As far as I know, there isn’t a VRBO listing in the immediate area.”
The facility is broken down into three components. If you seek an overnight stay, the VRBO suite is separate from the remaining portion of the lodge. It has its own entrance and features a king bed, fold-out couch, bath with shower, a refrigerator and a microwave.
The entire lodge can also be rented and includes both king suites and the banquet area.
Thirdly, the lodge can be rented starting at a two-hour minimum for social events.
“What’s nice about the lodge is it still has the restaurant kitchen intact if people want to bring in food,” Tefft noted. “There is a bar, but we don’t have a liquor license, but you can hire it in.”
The king suite and the lodge as a whole will be listed on VRBO.

four televisions, three bathrooms and two showers. Outside, you can find a disc golf course, a fire pit and a riverwalk path.
“There is a lot of land if you want to set up large tents and use the outdoor space,” Tefft stated.
The Teffts also operate Litchfield Outdoors in downtown Litchfield and Catfish Acres about three miles outside the city.
“We have some primitive cabins at Catfish Acres, but some people are looking for a nicer place to stay,” Dave said. “The lodge will fill that need, and the lodge is perfect for larer groups.
We encourage people to come out to the open house Thursday and see what we’ve done to the property. Candy and I think they will be impressed.”
Rate sheets will be available at that time. The first customers are booked for August 29, and Candy said they “will be raring to go by Labor Day weekend.”
