The Climax-Scotts varsity volleyball team won two matches and dropped one at the Marcellus Quad August 24.

C-S defeated Marcellus Howardsville Christian (25-22, 25-15) and Marcellus High School (25-22, 25-15) in two sets before falling to Fennville in two sets (19-25, 24-26).

Olivia Bolt totaled 19 kills to go with four solo blocks, two assisted blocks, 17 digs and four aces.

Kendal Reitz contributed 10 kills and 18 digs.

Alessandra Pontoni piled up 40 assists and added 13 digs and one ace.

Michaella Carillo-Keegan contributed 18 digs and four aces.

Carrie Adams Tournament

After emerging out of pool play with just one tie and two losses, the Lady Panthers won one match in bracket play before falling in the bracket semifinals in two games at the Carrie Adams Tournament at Harper Creek High School August 22.

C-S fell to Hillsdale Academy (12-25, 5-25) and Quincy (17-25, 19-25) in two games before earning a tie with Centreville (24-26, 25-23) in pool play.

The Lady Panthers enjoyed a strong first game in silver bracket play by downing Hillsdale High School in three games (25-23, 20-25, 15-12), but lost to Wyoming Tri-Unity in silver bracket semifinal play in two games (7-25, 21-25).

Senior libero Michaella Carillo-Keegan had 26 digs and four aces on the day.

Olivia Bolt had 18 kills, 15 digs and three blocks, and Alessandra Pontoni set the offense with 33 assists.

Climax-Scotts varsity football coach Justin Kirinovic and his team learned a few weeks ago week number 6 would be open when Athens revealed it would not be fielding a varsity football team.

However since Battle Creek St. Philip and Athens formed a co-op, C-S will play the newly formed co-op in place of the regularly scheduled game against St. Phil Sept. 26 at C.W. Post Field at 7 p.m.

However the October 2 date originally scheduled for the Athens game remains open and the C-S Athletic Department is still trying to schedule an opponent.

While Climax-Scotts does not have enough runners to score as a team in cross country, Panther coach David Lodes feels the dedicated runners he has are poised to have big seasons if they continue to work hard.

Senior Zach Roebuck is the lone returner at the high school level.

Senior Eli DeWaal, junior Alyssa Morrison, and freshmen Blake Morrison and Topanga Fields are currently the other members of the high school team.

Jaxon Marlowe (8th grade) and Riley Fields (6th grade) will be on the junior high team.

Lodes, entering his 18th season as head cross country coach at C-S, said Roebuck works hard in practice and he expects improvement on his finishes compared to last year.

Lodes said Blake Morrison set the junior high record for the two mile last year and “has the potential to make a run at qualifying for state this year if he continues working hard.”

Lodes said based on past results, a runner would need to be in the upper 18-minute range for the 5K to qualify for the state final, which he feels Morrison is capable of doing.

The Panther coach said Alyssa Morrison is coming off a strong year in track and is poised to have a good season as she makes the jump to a 5K race.

Lodes said DeWaal has been solid in practice so far in his first year of competing in distance running and is pushing Blake Morrison in practice.

Lodes adds Topanga is making the transition to high school and the 5k distance well and has been solid in practice so far.

“We’ve had a solid few weeks of practice so far and everyone is working hard and showing progress. There is potential for a few of the runners to perhaps make a run at qualifying for state this year,” observed Lodes.
