Alexander Banting McGarry
Alexander Banting McGarry, age 86, passed away peacefully August 8.
Son of Ford Motor Company controller Patrick and Marne (Banting) McGarry, Alex was born on July 27, 1940 in Detroit, the second of four children. His father's work took him on a youthful childhood residing in four states until leaving for college.
McGarry pursued a degree of Business Administration at Drake University in Des Moines, IA. Making many friends along the way, one special acquaintance stood brightly in the room. It proved to be his beloved life partner, Diane Fisher. They would marry in 1961 in Des Moines.
After graduating from Drake University, McGarry and Diane made their way up north to Minneapolis to attend University of Minnesota School of Law.
Upon graduation from Law School, McGarry and Diane returned to Detroit to accept a position with Ford Motor Company. Shortly thereafter, he entered the courthouse as a prosecuting attorney for the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. After honing his craft for many years, he stepped to the other side of the aisle and applied his skill set defending the public. His devotion to his craft and his dedication
to the public, proved to be enough to land him partner status at Condit, McGarry, Schloff. His career with the firm would last 38 years until his retirement in 1999.
In their early years, McGarry loved to travel with Diane and with friends to Ireland and the islands. Later they found a special place in their hearts, in a Gulf-side locale fondly called “Marco” (FL).
McGarry was an active participant in the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Oakland County Bar Association, and a founding member of Troy Medi-Go. As a devout Catholic, he administered communion as a eucharistic minister at Crittenton Hospital of Rochester Hills for more than 30 years.
Hi athletic achievements included Marine Corp Marathon x2 (one of which he had to carry a Marine on his back), Boston Marathon x1, Bike Virginia x5, and the jewel he would embrace like the rosary and only speak of if asked was RAGBRAI x5. Numerous other races and rides filled the void, both local and afar.
McGarry is survived by his daughters, Erin and Tim Moran, Molly and John Sullivan, Megan and John Burns; grandchildren Ashlyn, Daniel, Jack, Marne, Lauren, Aidan and Ava; sisters Cathy (Pete)
Pederson, Lois McGarry; sister-in-law Joan McGarry; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Diane (Fisher), and his brother Patrick McGarry Jr.
